Explanation of Local Taxes

Earned Income Tax (Wage Tax)

Any person residing in the school district and who is employed, even if only part-time or for a summer job, must pay this tax. This tax is due regardless of the person's age, the amount earned, or where employed. For Penn Township residents, the tax rate is 1% of the amount earned. Tax for the previous calendar year is due on April 15th. This tax is collected by Berkheimer.

Occupation Resident Tax

Any person employed and earning $1,000 or more while a resident of the school district must pay this tax, regardless of where employed. The amount of the tax is $10.00, which is due by November 30 of the current year. Half of this tax goes to the school district and half goes to the township. This tax is collected by Berkheimer.

Per Capita Tax (Act 511)

Any person who is 18 years of age or over on or before June 30th of the taxing year must pay this tax. This includes students, retired persons, and housewives. For Penn Township residents, the tax amount is $10.00. This tax is due by November 30 of the current year. A discount is available if the tax is paid before the Discount Date noted on the bill and a penalty applies if the bill is paid late. This tax is collected by Berkheimer.

Local Services Tax

All individuals who physically work within the borders of Penn Township and earn income from that work are subject to the $52.00 Local Services Tax. Unlike the previous EMS Tax, this is on all sources of earned income. In most cases, this is deducted by your employer.

There are exemptions to the Local Services Tax described on Pennsylvania's website:http://www.newpa.com/local-government/tax-information/local-services-tax. Look for the links "Up-Front Exemption" and "Military Exemption." Please call the tax office for exemption information. This tax is collected by Township Tax Collector Larry Wojcik.

Real Estate Property Taxes

Property taxes are assessed on any real estate held within the township. Westmoreland County/Penn Township Real Estate Taxes are due June 30, while school real estate taxes are due November 30. A discount is available if the tax is paid before the discount date noted on the bill and a penalty applies if the bill is paid late. Office hours are Monday thru Thursday 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. In April and September they are Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 3:30 pm and Wednesday till 6:00 pm.

Street Light Assessment

The street light assessment is assessed upon certain areas of the township that have street lights. The tax amount varies according to the property's front footage and is billed with the county/municipal taxes. This tax is collected by Township Tax Collector Larry Wojcik.

Amusement Device Fees

Amusement device fees are assessed upon any juke boxes or mechanical or electronic games used for profit. The fee amount is $100 per device per calendar year, which is due by March 15. This tax is collected by Township Treasurer, Mary Perez.

Junk Yard License

A junk yard license is required by all township junkyards. This tax is collected by Township Treasurer, Mary Perez.
